Description

For its first 50 years, the two-story 8,800 SF double brick-walled building located at 448 S. Texas Blvd. was home to The First National Bank (and a state bank before it). Its origin mirrors the city of Weslaco with one photo showing it standing by 1921. As such, it's older than some other popular icons of town: Weslaco's Works Progress Administration-funded water tower ("Tinaco") (1941), and Newell Waters' city hall and fire station (1928). During the Depression, the 300 to 500 blocks of South Texas Blvd participated in an early public-private project that brought Spanish Revival/Spanish Eclectic facades to this stretch (hence the stucco and clay tile roof), and Weslaco became known as the "City That Lifted Its Face" followed by the "The City With a Neon Skyline."
